The Saint Dominic School Board is an advisory committee to the Principal and Pastor that maintains an appropriate system of governance in the review, evaluation and determination of school policies and programs in order to support the school’s mission, philosophy and vision. The Saint Dominic School Board operates in accordance with the 1996 Archdiocese of Hartford Guidelines for Parish School Boards and its bylaws are based on the Model Constitution for Parish School Boards. The Board supports the Mission Statement of the school by upholding the school’s Catholic identity, supporting the efforts of the administration and faculty as they strive for academic excellence, promoting the school through a wide variety of advancement efforts and ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency through a balanced budget and regular review of expenditures and programming.
The School Board is comprised of 15 individuals appointed for a three-year term, renewable for a second term. The Pastor and Principal also sit on the board as ex-officio members.
The Saint Dominic School Board meets monthly, August through June, alternating formal and working meeting formats. Agendas are developed by the School Board Chair in consultation with the Principal and distributed prior to the meetings. Standing committees and ad-hoc sub-committees meet in addition to the monthly meetings. The Principal and Pastor attend each formal meeting.
The Saint Dominic School Board, while advisory in nature, is committed to its governance role. At the start of each school year, the Board’s Chair and Vice Chair, with recommendations by the Principal, assign committee membership based upon need and member skill sets. Each Committee is charged with the completion of several tasks throughout the school year; some responsibilities are ongoing, others may be temporal in nature. Committees may be periodically established to address a specific issue, for example, during the 2006-2007 school year, a Principal Search Committee was established to address the retirement of the school’s principal. Committees of the School Board may include individuals who are not currently School Board members, but who express an interest or possess expertise in a particular area. For example, our Technology Sub-committee contains several board members, faculty members and other individuals with expertise within the information technology sector.
The Saint Dominic School Board is a vital component of the School’s Community and continues to support the school’s mission, philosophy and vision to be the best Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese. Members of the Saint Dominic School Board unselfishly devote their time, energy, skill sets, and talents to this school. Through their example, as parents and leaders of their children’s school, and within a very active parish, they also support the school’s mission to prepare its students to become responsible leaders and role models within the Church, family and community through their words and deeds.
